Beware of Windows 7 Compatibility Checker – A Trojan Disguised a Useful Utility

The above Screen is the legitimate Windows Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft.

People are getting infected from a Trojan Horse disguised as a utility that will see if a PC is compatible with Windows 7.

The really scary part is that the dirtbags who wrote the Trojan use marketing text from Microsoft to make it sound “official” and real. They send out an email, and attach the Trojan to the email, but it looks like a .zip compressed file.

"Find out if your PC can run Windows 7," the e-mails read, echoing Microsoft's Web page. "This software scans your PC for potential issues with your hardware, devices, and installed programs, and recommends what to do before you upgrade."

Once a user installs the attached Zip file, a back door Trojan is installed, the same kind of virus that was found as the “fake FaceBook password reset” campaign.

This is another reminder to have a Good Antivirus program and have email scanning turned on. Also, NEVER, NEVER follow a link from an email, unless you are absolutely sure of it’s origin and it has been scanned.

There is a real program that I have recommended people to use to see if their computer is compatible to upgrade to Windows 7.

That real program is called Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and this one is from Microsoft and is legitimate.
