New Hack using IE 6 Can Expose Gmail Accounts & Your Computer

The hackers are up to it again, and now they have come up with a hack that attacks IE 6. They have tested IE 7 and IE 8 and have not seen as much success in getting through.

This hack was posted to the public, so now anyone that knows a bit about programming and fooling around can use this to get into your account. The problem with this one is that it is REALLY easy and anyone can follow the directions and work it.

Microsoft has not yet released a patch, and their regular security updates are not due until early Feb, so don't hold your breath for a saving patch soon.

The way this one works is called Spear Phishing. They send you an email of an offer too good to be true. You click on the link in the email, and it takes you to a site that installs the malicious code on your computer.

HOW TO AVOID

1. Get the latest updated browser. For Internet Explorer, you need to be using at least IE 7, I highly recommend IE8, as the security built in is pretty good. I do not know where the stigma of IE8 has come from, but overall it works well, I have been using it since it came out and so has Dawn in the office, with little or no problems.

You can switch to Google Chrome or Firefox, but honestly, they are being attacked also, and it is not necessarily the answer. Internet Explorer works pretty darn well. I have tried all the major browsers, and really don't like them, and I always end up going back to IE.

2. I know I keep harping on this, but Keep the Windows updates UPDATED! Over and over I see infected computers without the latest service pack, in both Vista and XP. Keep the Windows Security updates coming, do not turn them off.

3. Do not Open mail from strangers (or accept candy, unless it is quality chocolate of course...) and DO NOT click on links from email, from anyone you do not know or trust. Links in email are a virus attack waiting to happen.

For more information on this virus, here is an article explaining more details.
