Outlook If you use Microsoft Outlook for your email, Outlook Express or Microsoft Mail (in Vista) backing up your email is not too hard and only takes a few steps.
Outlook stores your email, contacts and calendar all in one file called a .pst file or personal folder. All you have to do is save the one file, and you have the whole enchilada!
With Microsoft Outlook there is a backup tool that is a free download, and you download it to your computer, then run and install it. It installs right into Outlook, and then you go to File>Backup and just follow the prompt. There is even an option to choose where the backup goes. You can back it up to another hard drive, CD or over a network.

Outlook Express
Outlook Express is notas easy. There are several steps, and they are outlined in this document from Microsoft
The process is not hard, but not as straight forward as Outlook.
First you locate the "Store" folder, where your email is stored for that account. Then you copy the contents of that folder to a new backup folder. All a bit manual, but all doable if you follow the instructions in the above document.
It also shows you how to save your address book.
Windows Mail
Vista does not come with Outlook Express, but it has Windows Mail. It looks and acts pretty much like Express, but it has been Vistaized. It looks oh so pretty...
Vista has a File Backup utility built into the Operating System. If you go to Control Panel>System Maintenance on some versions, and Control Panel>Backup and Restore Center.
It allows you to back up your data, your email, photos, and other various choices. It is pretty good, and finally built into Windows. Windows 7 will also have these features from what we have been told.
